A free Candy AI account can send up to 5 messages to a character. After that, the chat needs Premium. The Shorts section works the other way round: its first episodes cost no tokens, and you watch them without chatting at all. That difference is why I review Candy AI from the Shorts side, and why this page lays out the rest of the platform before you decide where to spend.
What is Candy AI? The platform around the Shorts
Candy AI is an AI companion platform run by EverAI Limited, a Maltese company. Chat is its main product: you pick a character, or build one, and exchange messages with it, and some characters and creators also have a series. The Terms of Service describe the service as a chat application that also produces AI-generated images, videos and voice notes, and they call each exchange with a character entirely fictional. Characters are sorted into three categories: female characters, anime characters and male characters.
Candy AI Shorts is a separate entry in the same side menu, next to Chat and Create Character. On October 20, 2026, it lists 168 scripted series, each a run of vertical episodes lasting a minute or two. You watch them with no chat, and watching an episode leaves your chat history alone. The chat only enters after the last second: 134 of the 153 open series then suggest chatting with the lead character.
How I tested this
- I've used the chat and the character builder on Premium, along with the image and video generators. On the same login I press play on the opening pair of each series, the Spicy ones too, then dip into later episodes to see whether quality holds. Spicy is the tag Candy puts on its adult-content series.
- I compare what a free account and Premium open: episode 1 opens for a guest, episode 2 needs a free account, and Spicy waits behind Premium.
- My scores cover the series. I describe the chat, the builder and the generators as someone who has used them, by what they do and what they cost in messages and tokens, and I leave them ungraded.
- Plan prices live in the pricing guide, so this page counts messages and tokens instead.
Who should pay for Candy AI, and who should stay free
Pay for Premium if you want unlimited chat or your own characters, or if you want the Spicy series, which open only with it. Stay on a free account if you came for the stories: episode 1 plays as a guest, episode 2 asks for a free sign-up, and the free route covers the rest. Skip Candy AI if you want a free chat, since 5 messages is the limit, or if a subscription that renews on its own bothers you.
What Premium adds, and what it changes for the Shorts
Premium comes with six perks. Four matter for the chat and the generators, and one matters a lot for the series: the 100 tokens a month. Tokens pay for paid episodes, and image generation and voice notes draw on them too.
| Premium perk | In the chat | In Candy Shorts |
|---|---|---|
| Unlimited text messages | Lifts the 5-message cap of a free account | No effect, since the series play without a chat |
| 100 tokens per month | Pays for extras such as images and voice notes | Pays for paid episodes at 12 tokens apiece in most series, 30 in the creator ones and 50 in the five Spicy creator ones |
| Create your own AI Girlfriend(s) | Opens the companion builder | Not part of the series, though some episodes end with a create-a-character prompt |
| Generate 18+ Images and Videos | Makes media from your characters | Separate from the series, covered in the guide to Candy AI videos |
| Premium itself | Removes the free limits | Opens the Spicy series, whose first two episodes carry no token charge |
The sixth perk is Full Live Action Experience. Candy.ai doesn't explain it, so I leave it out of the table. Plan prices sit in the pricing guide, and across the 153 open series the first two episodes need no tokens, while episode 1 plays even without an account.
Chat, characters and the builder: how it works
The chat is the core of the platform: you message a character, and it answers in character. On the Premium plan you can also build your own, listed as creating your own AI girlfriend(s). I've used the builder, and it lets you choose traits such as hair, eye color, personality, voice and hobbies; the more detailed the companion, the more tokens it uses.
Three rules matter once you start chatting. Each exchange is fiction: the characters have no genuine emotions and can't keep promises such as a real-life meeting. You shouldn't share financial details, addresses, contact information or passwords with a character. And moderation controls can change a request before anything is generated, with flagged content open to manual review.
How Candy AI and Candy AI Shorts connect through the creators
The creator shelf is where chat and series overlap most. Nineteen Candy Shorts series star licensed digital twins of six creators, and all six are reachable in chat through their twins, Lexi Luna and Asa Akira among them. A twin is a digital version of the creator, made together with her and only with her approval. The creators did not perform in the episodes, and no real performer appears on screen.
On Premium, the creator series were the ones that felt most finished to me, which is where the 100 tokens feel best spent. My Wife's Best Friend and Private Lessons are good samples, since their opening pairs cost no tokens, and who the six creators are has the profiles. If you came only for the stories, the format explained tells you what an episode is, and the Candy Shorts player doesn't require a chat.
Who runs Candy AI, and why I don't rank rivals
On paper, the business checks out. The Terms name EverAI Limited as the operator, public documents cover refunds and privacy, and the charge on a bank statement reads EverAI. Whether it is safe to pay gets its own check, so I stay brief here.
I don't compare other companion apps. This guide covers Candy AI and its Shorts, and ranking products I haven't used would be guesswork. Inside Candy AI, the nearest alternative to chatting is watching: the Shorts need no chat, no builder and no message budget.
